SecurAlarm Tips for Securing Your Home

An alarm system is the easiest way to deter an intruder as it draws immediate attention to a potential burglary. Additionally, by having a 24/7 monitored security system, you can quickly notify law enforcement of the incident and get dispatched assistance even if you are not home.

Your Home Doors and Windows

Locking your doors with a deadbolt

  • Always lock your doors and windows when you leave the house, even when you're just out in the yard.
Almost 50% of all break-ins happen without the use of force. This means that many people leave their homes without locking their doors and windows. Always latch deadbolts on your doors and double-check weaker doors such as patio and sliding door to ensure that they are secure. And don't forget to lock the door leading from the garage to the house!
  • Even when locked, breaking into some older sliding doors can be simply done by breaking the latch or popping them off of their frame. By using a strong dowel, steel bar, or a two-by-four placed in the track between the door frame and door will prevent the door from being compromised or opened.
  • Never hide a key, even if it seems like a "secret" place. Most times, these places are too obvious and don't take much effort to find.
  • Remember to check window air conditioning units and secure the window frames from being pried open.
Make sure windows can latch and lock tightly. If they don't, you can simply place a pin or nail into to the frame to stop it from raising more than a few inches. Making sure a screen is in place will also add another layer of security.

Your Yard

  • Tall shrubs and overgrown trees are easy hiding places for criminals. Keeping your yard manicured especially shrubs in front of windows will reduce easy access points for potential burglars. Cut away any tall tree branches that can provide "make shift" ladders to gain access to any upper story windows or balconies.
  • Consider adding motion-activated lights around the perimeter of your home. This will help draw attention to any unwanted or suspicious movement.

Your Belongings

  • Keeping curtains, blinds, and shades closed will prevent any suspected burglars from spotting enticing valuable items; keeping them out of sight and out of mind. This includes electronics, keys, purses, wallets, and cash.
  • The same goes for your trash. If you have recently purchased any high-end electronics or appliances, keep any of the boxes or wrapping hidden until garbage/recycling day.
  • Don't leave lawn mowers and bikes unattended outside. This creates temptation for the quick grab.

People in Your HomeProperly trimmed yard

  • Don't let strangers or sales people in your home without seeing some identification and proof of employment. If they come to your door, don't let them in your house and meet with them on your porch.
  • Be careful about how much information you give about your belongings and schedule. With all the social networking sites and their growing popularity, it can give easy insight into your lifestyle and whether or not you are home.

Vacation or Out of Town

  • If you are going on vacation or out of town, use timers to switch lights on and off at random. Also, cancel newspapers and put mail deliveries on hold avoiding that others know you are away. You can also arrange for a trusted neighbor or family member to collect them and watch over your home.
