SecurAlarm Systems Case Study - Steelcase Inc.

Posted by: James Edel

The Problem

Steelcase Inc, the global leader in workplace products, furnishings and services has an “Extend the Reach” initiate whose goal is to expand the reach of corporate services to Steelcase facilities world-wide.  The Protection Services team was limited in their ability to provide services to Steelcase sites world-wide because of the technological limitations of their access control, video surveillance, and alarm systems.  As a result, remote sites were purchasing their own systems or services, resulting in a lack of standardization, and a lack of consistency, and an investment in stand-alone systems that didn’t allow for the Protection Service team to monitor, manage or view what was happening at remote sites.

The Solution

SecurAlarm introduced Steelcase to the Lenel OnGuard Security Management platform in 2009.  The Lenel platform provides a single database for managing access control, video surveillance, and alarm monitoring functions.  All three functions are integrated so that access and alarm events can automatically trigger a video reaction.  One software platform, one system, one user interface.  The Steelcase global IT network provides the backbone for world-wide communication.

The Result

Steelcase Protection Services is now able to provide 24-hour monitoring, dispatch, and investigative services to Steelcase sites world-wide, thus extending their reach by providing round-the-clock services so that individual Steelcase sites do not need to incur the expense of purchasing and staffing these services locally.  Not only have they been able to extend their reach without expanding their department, they have been able to leverage the power of integrated system functionality, and provide better customer service to Steelcase facilities regardless of time zone, country, or continent!

As an organization, SecurAlarm Systems has continually strived to be both innovative and “best in class” in not only the products and services they provide to their external clients, but with the policies and practices they have put into place for their internal clients….their employees.  This, coupled with their “best in class” team, helped them earn a spot on the list for 2011.

An independent research firm evaluates all entries and assesses nominated companies on a number of key measures in categories that include Communication, Community Initiatives, Compensation and Benefits, Diversity and Multiculturalism, Employee Education and Development, Employee Engagement and Commitment, Recognition and Retention, Recruitment and Selection, Small Business and Work-Life Balance.
“This year’s 101 award recipients stand out from most businesses in that they have exceeded traditional human resource practices to recruit, develop, motivate and retain their employees. They acknowledge the value their employees have on affecting the success of their company,” said Jennifer Kluge, MBPA chief operating officer and executive vice president. “We are very impressed by the commitment that they have demonstrated to their employees.”

Honorees will be celebrated at the human resources symposium and awards program on May 5th at the Pinnacle Center in Hudsonville.
